Pastelist Don Palaschak was born and raised in
Streator, a north central Illinois farm community. He discovered his
drawing ability at age eight. Farm life caused him to observe and enjoy
the beauty of God's creation. Each season's colors, the
natural setting of the farm, the fields and gardens surrounded him.

Don continued his interest in art, taking a double
art class each day in high school followed by attendance at the American
Academy of Art in Chicago in 1948 and 1949. The basics
and fundamentals of training were then established. After
serving in the military during the Korean War, graphic design became his
career choice, to provide for marriage and family.

For several years Don had studied the lives of many
artists, their work and biographies. Attending gallery shows, museums
and reading a continual flow of art publications: He
particularly enjoys the French Impressionists as well as
the American and California Impressionists of the late
nineteenth and early twentieth century.

It wasn't until November of 1995 that Don enrolled in
a pastel class at Mainstreet Art Center under the able teaching of
Frankie Johnson whose guidance and encouragement have allowed a
new dimension of talent to develop. His chosen media, pastel,
prompts spontaneity, immediacy, quickness and allows
endless mixture and overlaying of colors, both brilliant and
subtle with varying strokes and textures.
